Square Root Of Margaret Canadian Tour (2008).

June 11, 2009

Click the picture above to enlarge & see the dates for the Cross Canada Tour.

This is also about the time that Ben Srokosz joined the band as the new drummer. 2008 also saw the release ‘Time Machines Box Set Volume 1’. I bought one and was impressed. It came in a custom box. It included a retro style zine, their first 3 CDs, stickers, SROM matches and a few other cool things.

Below is a video interview with the boys on the Rogers Television Show. This “London Calling”, episode aired in early 2008.. This edited version talks a little bit about Chatham Kent & how the band came to be.

It was in the Fall of 2006 when those friendly ex-magician’s of Square Root of Margaret came off of a very successful western tour of Canada, in support of their previous album “Cloud Nine Revisited.” While on a brief break from the road, SRoM’s drummer managed to cut his thumb off! Although the doctor’s were able to successfully re-attach the digits, the inner thumb needed further healing. And so the intrepid stunt-drummer set off to the eastern coast of Canada, with recovery on his mind.

He was gone for six months. Not content to sit around twiddling their own, the other fellows in Square Root of Margaret set about writing and recording what would prove to be their most ambitious pop album to date…Teragram Photeur! 13 new songs about time and space, perception, and perspective

Here is the Video “Hollywood Will Find A Way” from this CD. Filming and Editing:

Jason McFadden Ben Srokosz

7 Cellophane Heart
8 Whispers Sometimes

10 Wow
11 Alien Frequency
12 (Theme From) Inter-connectedness
13 All the Moments

In the Spring of 2005, Square Root of Margaret came out of nowhere with a new recording titled “Levitation Days.” This CDep ended years of silence from the band, and any speculation in regards to where they were, and what they were doing…. Within weeks of it’s release, “Levitation Days” landed in the Top 50 Canadian College Radio charts with no press whatsoever! Across Canada, college radio was picking up on this psych-pop gem, and helping to re-introduce the music of Square Root of Margaret to happy ears everywhere! The band soon found themselves playing more and more live shows, working on new material, and staring directly into strobelights. They set about writing and recording a pop album for our time. 13 new songs about life, love, alien frequencies, and time travel.

…. I just wanted to add that this record, in my opinion, has some of the best gems put out from around here. The song “I Don’t Know Why” is a song that must be heard & will outlive the band for years to come. Find it and pass it on.

Square Root Of Margaret – Levitation Days (2004)

May 6, 2009

squarerootofm_2004

squarerootobm_2004

Artist: Square Root Of Margaret
Release: Levitation Days
Home: Chatham
Date: 2004
Formed: Oct.1992
Disbanded: Oct. 2012.

Musicians:
Po Kadot – Vocals, Guitar
Dennis R. – Bass
Todd Clarke – drums
Joshua Brisco – guitar

The Scoop: Levitation Days is a sonic step through the looking glass, into a psychedelic world of sound and imagery. Each of the songs featured in this recording are literal translations of actual dream imagery, set to mystifying classic pop melodies. Thick layers of instrumentation set the tone and create the atmosphere, while the lyrics take the listener on a guided tour down the rabbit hole and back out through the stereo speakers! Guitars and synthesizers dance with bass and drums while space cars cross galaxies, and bubbling tulips converse with soft, colored clouds. Strange and wonderful sights and sounds await you!

Square Root Of Margaret – Endless Rotation (2001)

May 6, 2009

squarerootofm_2001

Artist: Square Root Of Margaret
Home: Chatham Ontario Canada
CD Release: Endless Rotation
Genre: twisted Zappa/Floyd psych-rockers
Date: 2001
Formed: Oct.1992
Disbanded: Oct. 2012.
Download the CD @ Itunes here.

Musicians:
Po Kadot – Vocals, Guitar
Dennis R. – Bass
Todd Clarke – drums
Joshua Brisco – guitar

The Scoop: Playing distorted pop that has grown from psychedelic roots, they acknowledge Butthole Surfers and Ween as influences. They’ve dished out the melodic grooves since 1993.
It was just last fall (2000) that a fire had destroyed about $20,000 worth of their gear. The band is back with a strong demo that will stand the test of time. The band enjoyed local cult status through the 90’s & is still one of the leading innovators in our scene.
The band did a tour to the East Coast & back in support of this demo. Stand out track is Angelene

Track Listing
1. Kick Me Again (I Love You)
2. Oyster Pirates II
3. Run For The Door
4. All Blonde Trees
5. Dr. Firm
6. Garden Party
7. Misery & Destiny
8. Before You Leave
9. Angelene
10. 1000s Of Miles
11. Time Components
12. Ba-Ba-Buttercup
13. Imp

Notes: Square Root Of Margaret lost all their musical equipment Oct. 29th  2000 in a fire that eliminated Beatniks Café, a local bar on King Street. The band stored their stuff in a room above the bar. Two benefit shows were put on to help raise money for the band to get replacement equipment. Some city businesses also helped the cause with donations. The band recovered with thanks to everyone who helped out.

Track Listing: White Sox, Oyster Pirates, Surfin With Nostradamus, And Ever, The Obvious Man, Little Green Bug, Whiskey and Wine, Spunk on a stick, The Picnic Occultist, Wednesdays On Jupiter

The Demo: another chaotic adventure from the underground. Another bizarre night at the Aberdeen, or Mr. B’s, the PARKVIEW.
‘Little Green Bug’ became a cult favorite & made SROM another major force in what was a banner year for local music.
This CD is full of trippy tails & I recommend you scoop it up, or anything by anyone local this year 1997.
The Magic happens at the House Of Bleen, have you heard ?

Square Root Of Margaret – Casual Man-Slayer (1994)

1. Angry Sex Meat
2. You’ll Never Get Out Of Your Diapers If You Don’t Stop Shiting
3. White Sox
4. Population Party for 2
5. Lusty Shadows

I love this band. Josh was my neighbor, Po played with me in my first band, & Dennis jammed on bass with us in the early days. All this happened before S.R.O.M. met.
S.R.O.M. were a cult in themselves and it was like the inner circle wished the world away. They remain to be one of the longest running bands from Chatham still in 2009 when this little edit was written.  These guys have plenty of hidden gems in their massive catalogue so it is worth poking through it,.

Listen to them here, here, or there.

Po And Square Root Of Margaret (2009)

April 30, 2009

Back in Grade 8, We did the school talent show (St.Ursula) performing the song ‘Strutter’ by Kiss. It included Bryan (Po, singer & guitarist for Square Root Of Margaret) on drums, Jason P on vocals & myself (Shawn Beaulieu) on Guitar. That was friggin 20 years ago!

A few years later, Po would form S.R.O.M. & I would form Foster Child. Here is a flash back to one of the longest running (original music) bands in Chatham History, & the coolest band outside the box.
