Band: Colours Album: Love Heals: The Complete Recordings Year: 2008 Genre: Rock Home: California Label: Now Sounds
Chatham-Kent Connection:Jack Dalton (Guitarist/song writer) was raised in Erieau, moved around the U.S.A. and now resides in Detroit.
The Dalton family is well known in Erieau, as Mr. Dalton was known for years as Detroit’s Irish Tenor. The whole family are very musical and have entertained there neighbours with playing, singing and dancing. Jack was a member of the Dalton Boys, with his brothers Wally & Dan. The trio was booked to open Randy Sparks’ new club, Ledbetter’s, in October of 1963.
Brother Dan Dalton also had a great time in the music scene as a member of the Back Porch Majority, playing banjo and 12-string guitar.
Discography 1968- Self Titled 1969 – Atmosphere 2008 – Love Heals: The Complete Recordings
Colours launched onto the scene in 1968 with a stunningly glorious psychedelic masterpiece of L.A studio wizardry. A super group before the name was coined, Colours was the brainchild of Gary Montgomery & Jack Dalton, two hard-working, former Motown songwriters who also penned songs for The Turtles, Nino & April and The Moon. This magical mystery tour-de-force of psychedelic Beatlesque pop also features the talents of Derek & The Dominos bassist Carl Radle.
This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print albums (Colours and Atmosphere) is supplemented by long-lost 67 Dalton & Montgomery recordings cut just months before they formed Colours. 1969′s Atmosphere features former Beach Boy David Marks around the same time he was a member of The Moon another band with many connections to Colours.
The 16-page colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members. Now Sounds, the new imprint from Cherry Red, was established by Steve Stanley, producer of over 50 Rev – Ola titles.
_____________
Notes: Colours also had members from Derek & The Dominos and The Beach Boys in the band. Signed to Dot on the basis of their sitar-and-bagpipe-hued novelty 45, Brother Lou’s Love Colony. Cooked up, at times, under the all too discernable influence of the Fab Four, Colours is unashamedly Pepper-esque in its use of lavish arrangements recorded in no-expense- spared fashion with the 36-piece LA Philharmonic. By contrast, Atmosphere is a darker, less generic and more subdued recording. Love Heals also includes Dalton & Montgomery’s White Whale 45 and three previously unreleased demos which pre-date Colours’ mid-1967 formation. (Source)

Chatham-Kent Connection: Jack Dalton was raised in Erieau. Jack Dalton started playing music with his four brothers, The Dalton Brothers, when he was six years old. They performed the “banquet circuit” with their father, Walter Dalton (aka Michigan’s Irish Tenor), who also had his own radio show. “The Colours” were a West-Coast Psychedelic Pop act that came together in 1967 at the request of songwriters, “Jack Dalton” and “Gary Montgomery”, two hard-working, former Motown Records songwriters who also penned songs for “The Turtles”, “Nino & April” and “The Moon”.
Jack’s Background: When Jack was 17 years old, he and two of his brothers, Wally and Dan, formed a folk group called The Dalton Boys, which became successful performing at concerts and playing nightclubs such as Philadelphia’s Latin Quarter, New Orleans’ Playboy Club, and New York’s Bitter End. They were the first group to record ”San Francisco Bay Blues” on Decca Records. The Dalton Boys soon appeared on several national TV shows such as ABC’s Hootenanny, The Mike Douglas Show, and Mike Wallace’s PM East.??
After The Dalton Boys retired, Jack collaborated with a new writing partner, Gary Montgomery, and they signed with Motown Records, recording original songs, continuing with the name The Dalton Boys. Jack and Gary moved to the West Coast and became staff writers for White Whale Records, Robbins Fiest and Miller, and wrote for The Turtles, The Outsiders, Spiral Starecase, and April and Nino.
Jack and Gary then formed a rock group, Colours, and had radio airplay with a single called “Love Heals” b/w Bad Day at Blackrock Baby on Dot Records. After the group disbanded, Jack returned to Detroit and started a jingle company with Jeff Parsons. The Road Company quickly became the largest jingle company in Detroit, with Jack writing, arranging, playing, and singing on most of the commercials.
In 1980 Jack returned to his ”first love,” performing. He joined Doug Jacobs’ Red Garter Band and played 250 one-nighters annually. Jack continues to make his living in Detroit, singing and playing guitar ?and banjo in Detroit-based bands as well as being booked by Detroit agents as a solo performance act.

From 2002-2006 they played heavily at bars, parties, Stag & Does, and other events. During those first four years, Nate Spicer was the lead guitarist for the band.
In 2007, the band began to shift to writing and playing original music. It began when Mike (Vocals) entered the studio in 2007 to record an original entitled “Simple Times”. Notes: The band released their first CD in 2003 entitled “Small Town Metaphors”. Although all the members have a rich history with various bands before this, it is worth noting that the band really rolled in this direction from its roots as “the Flaming O’Hara’s”. In 1993, the Flaming O’Hara’s released a CD that included Clancy & Toby. The group played Jersey’s many times during 2009 along with shows in other cities.
Band: The Golden Eagles Release: The Gold Album Year: 2009 Formed: Early 2008 Home: Windsor/ Chatham-Kent
Members:
Jamie Reaume – Vocals and guitar.
Neil Tupling – Bass (ex-Lost Souls Division)
Geoff Yunker – drums.
Notes: Some of you may know singer songwriter Jamie Reaume from his previous band Foreign Film Star, or saw him play a solo acoustic show in Chatham or Windsor. He used to often play at the Elephant’s Nest and other venues while growing up in Chatham.
Jamie is currently living in the Windsor area and his new band involves musicians from there as well.
This is a great indie CD worth checking out. Their first single “Cell Phone” is a great indication of jamie improving consistently with his song writing and song structures. This track alone shows signs of a band who gets it and has worked hard to drop tracks that simply rock without trying to over play, be too artsy, or too safe.

Band: The Jubilaires Year: 1956 Home: Chatham Ontario Genre: Country Formed: 1956
Members (L-R) Lionel Richie – Drums
Oscar Demers – Rhythm guitar
Roland Lozon – Fiddle
Oscar Benoit – Lead guitar.
Circa: 1956 – 1961
The Jubilaires have a long history that lasted through many decades.
The original line-up was an instrumental group that put on their own dances in order to perform live.
They rented an old hall, which was originally for hay storage on the second floor of a horse stable in Pain Court, next to the Dover Hotel. Posters were made, a bouncer was hired and a refreshment booth was set up. When the “Bunny Hop” was played, the floor would bounce and it was concern for the band that the crowd would go through the floor. Lots of dust would fly up at each hop. There were no chairs and tables, just a board along the side walls.
For the very first dance, the boys cleaned the hall on Wednesday, decorated it on Thursday, played it on Friday night, and cleaned it up on Saturday. They took the profit of $18 and split it 6 ways. These go getters put on a dance every Friday from June 30th to November 30, 1956.
Sam Lozon did join the band as the singer and guitarist circa 1957 and decided to retire from music.
During performances, the band would usually spot two female singers. Doreen Lecuyer and Louella Demers (Oscar’s sister)
In 1960, The Myers Brothers joined the band resulting in a name change to “Myers Brothers and the Jubilaires (The)”. After that long run, they became known as the Jubilaires II, followed by a brief and final line-up called “Front Page News”.

Article: Jan.31st 1970, By Doug Waite, CDN.
There’s a musical group in our town, which, if dedication and perseverance is any indication, will eventually make it to the top.
The Quintet comprised of Mark Tremblay – Organ, Byron Stoehr – Bass, Raymond Violot – Vocals, Harmonica, Rick Chrysler – Drums, Tom Lockwood – Gibson Guitar call themselves Nexus. This name of Latin origin means “bond and unity”.
And bond and unity is just what these young fellows have displayed in their endeavor to create a sound that will give Nexus an individuality instantly recognized as all their own.
They played at the Thames Theatre Laugh-In last Saturday night and judging by the number of people – young people in particular – who crowded into the art gallery to dance and listen to the style they are in the process of perfecting, is “going well”.
On January 31 The Nexus are producing their own concert and dance at the Thames Theatre. Three bands will be featured in the production. Besides The Nexus, the New Set will be there from London and another Chatham based group. Refugee will perform in addition to the concert, a dance will be held simultaneously in the art gallery for those who like to dance. According to the members of The Nexus the event will be the best of its kind ever held in the area.
The Nexus have an unusual history and many people would like to know why the group took steps to separate themselves from the outside world. In explanation it is interesting to know that the boys, about seven months ago, moved to the wide open spaces near Erieau and secured a big house where they could practice to their heart’s content without complaint from any unsympathetic public.
Actually, explained a spokesman for the group, the band had been together about 18 months. Most of that time was marked by doing other people’s songs with other people’s arrangements.
The spokesman said the band never had the time to develop anything substantial on their own because of commitments to school, jobs, and inadequate rehearsal facilities.
“Finally” he said, “in spite of these obstacles we arrived at a point where we either had to take the necessary steps to develop our own music or settle for another run-of-the-mill rock group”.
With this in mind four of the five members of the band severed practically all connections with “normal” school, work and social life in Chatham and moved to the house near Erieau. The other member, who was unable to come because of commitments at home, joins his confreres whenever possible.
There, with almost unlimited rehearsal time, they were finally able to concentrate on the music they wanted to produce. This explained the spokesman, involves more time than at first appears.
“To develop a band that is really distinctive,” he elaborated, “the members must not only be talented musically, they must be able to work together, sacrifice their own egos for the overall sound and have the insight to recognize the strength and weaknesses of the other members of the band and be able to compensate for them.”
While arrangements are, of course, part of the music the Nexus play, improvisation is the thing. That’s the most important part of their music.
The ability to create music and communicate emotions with ideas invented on the spur of the moment is a valuable gift and to all intents and purposes, the Nexus have made more than moderate success
Everything is not peaches and cream however, and to play music such as theirs the Nexus must have the perseverance to be able to accept the setbacks and criticisms that are part of the progress pattern.
The idea is not peculiar, but, according to the youthful spokesman, “No band in this area and very few in Canada have tried to carry the idea of musical improvisation and arranging to the extent we have.”
It is to their credit they have been able to go through many changes and still remain original membership.

Notes:
This is the sophomore self-titled release through Universal Canada that spawned major radioplay for songs such as Bomb Hands, Everyday (Late November) and He Said, She Said. That latter song earned Social Code nominations at the Western Canadian Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year and Outstanding Rock Recording of the Year, and continues to get frequent spins on the country’s modern rock radio stations.
After sharing the stage with bands such as Fall Out Boy, The Used, Good Charlotte, Ten Second Epic and Alexisonfire, Canadian punk-rockers drop their new highly-anticipated album
It’s more Social Code than anything we’ve ever done, asserts Nesbitt, who also designed the record’s artwork. This album is Social Code. The album, which was mixed by Arnold Lanni (Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan) and Mike Fraser (Metallica, AC/DC, Hinder), netted Social Code a deal with Universal Music, which will release it on May 8. And as for all the people who told them they couldn’t do it, all the inner turmoil and all the moments of lost direction? They’re all lessons that have made Social Code, stronger, better and wiser.

Bio Formed in 1999 by high-school friends Travis Nesbitt (vocals) and Logan Jacobs (bass), the Canadian alternative rock act Social Code initially operated under the name Fifth Season. The group issued Patiently Waiting in 2001 before changing to its present name, the bandmembers realizing that they shared their original moniker with a popular group overseas.
After a development deal with Columbia Records fell through, the band wound up ultimately inking a deal with Interscope in late 2003. Social Code released their proper debut album, A Year at the Movies, in May 2004, and the following fall was spent on the road, where the group played shows alongside Bif Naked, Good Charlotte, and the guys from MTV’s Jackass. The album went on to sell over 20,000 copies in Canada alone, though besides some attention for the song “Beautiful,” the band remained largely unknown in the United States.
Several lineup changes occurred over the years; after guitarist David Hesse exited the band during the mid-2000s, Chris Ruddy (formerly of Drive by Punch) joined the existing lineup of Nesbitt, Jacobs, and drummer Ben Shillabeer. Ruddy was later replaced by guitarist Morgan “Macchio” Gies, and the revised group built a studio in the basement of bassist Jacobs’ house before setting to work on a follow-up album. Released solely in Canada in May 2007, the self-titled Social Code heightened the band’s profile when its lead single, “Bomb Hands,” received heavy video rotation from MuchMusic. Also helping things was a string of early 2008 tour dates alongside likeminded bands Hedley and Sum 41. Again, though, Social Code’s U.S. presence was minor; they hoped to change things with the release of their U.S debut, the self-released EP He Said She Said, in late October 2008. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide.

Whaling is the best 70’s inspired guitar jam band in general. A man with a true passion for his craft and is all about the music. I got to see him perform before I was of age since my Dad joined the band on bass for a while. They rehearsed at my house. The music is solid & the passion is real, and to top it all off, they are down to earth guys.
Not to cut the other members short, Ray has been blessed to play with the best in the business locally. Whaling is a great band that is worth a listen.
